If you’ve never used turmeric or even heard of it, now’s the time to add this amazing spice in your life. It’s not just for curry but is fantastic for healing inflammation from the inside out. It’s sort of a secret beauty weapon. It not only has incredible healing properties (my mom has high blood pressure and is taking it as a supplement because there is evidence it prevents heart disease and improves brain function) but it’s also a great beauty product. Turns out people around the world have long used turmeric for its healing properties and cosmetic benefits.
What Is Turmeric?
Turmeric is a bright, yellow-orange spice found in many southeast Asian dishes. It’s related to ginger, and is available as a ground spice or in supplements and other beauty and dermatology products. It’s used as a flavoring and coloring agent and as a medicinal and beautifying herb.
Turmeric gets its health benefits primarily because of curcumin, the active ingredient. Curcumin not only decreases antibacterial growth on your skin which in turn reduces acne-causing and odor-causing bacteria and prevents body odor and the spreading of infections. It also has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which can help to reduce redness, exfoliate skin and tighten your pores.
Turmeric Skin Benefits
Here are a few turmeric skin benefits and reasons why you need to add this spice to your skincare regimen:
- Turmeric is rich in antioxidants that slow down cell damage and provide a luster to your skin, bringing out its natural glow.
- Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties make it a great detox agent. This in turn reduces body odor.
- It exfoliates skin and improves its texture.
- It can help wounds heal more quickly.
- Its anti-inflammatory properties helps skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and scabies.
- It lightens your skin and evens out its tone.
- It removes underarm hair and smooths skin.
Simple DIY Turmeric Armpit Mask
Since turmeric offers internal and external benefits, there are plenty of ways to incorporate its healing properties into your DIY skincare products. And this simple armpit mask contains turmeric and honey which are naturally antiseptic and antibacterial, and they soothe inflamed skin.
Makes about 1/2 ounce.
- 1 tablespoonful Ground Turmeric
- About 1 teaspoonful Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 tablespoonful Raw Honey, warmed
- About 1-2 teaspoonfuls Milk (to remove stains)
- Antibacterial body spray with aloe vera (optional)

- Mix the turmeric powder with the apple cider vinegar and honey in a small glass bowl. Mix it well until it achieves a thin paste-like consistency.
- Use clean hands to spread a thin layer onto each armpit. Let the turmeric armpit mask sit for approximately 15-20 minutes.
- Rinse with warm water, using a soft, wet washcloth.
Note: If the turmeric powder stains your skin yellow, apply milk to a cotton ball and swipe all over the stained skin.
After drying my armpits, I like to use an antibacterial body spray with aloe vera to soften, soothe and nourish my skin. This is totally optional, but it helps with the detox process and it’s great for your skin!
Repeat mask twice a week for lighter, smoother and hair-free underarms.
This recipe makes more than you need for a single use so keep the extra mask in a small, covered jar. Store in a cool, dry spot.
Can This Turmeric Armpit Mask Stain Your Skin?
One thing you need to know about turmeric — and the thing I learned first hand — is just how powerful a coloring agent it is. Turmeric can stain skin yellow, especially pale skin, and even clothes when used in a DIY skincare recipe.
If you notice discoloration after using this mask, you can always use a milk-soaked cotton ball to go over the discolored skin or wash your armpits again.
To minimize the chances of turmeric staining your skin, I definitely recommend applying a thin layer — the more turmeric you use, the higher the chances of your skin being stained. I also noticed some staining on my fingers but that came off easily after washing my hands.
Have fun and enjoy your lighter, smoother, hair-free underarms!
