Natural Deodorant Spray

Summer is approaching fast! That means the weather is getting hotter and we’re spending a lot more time outdoors. Being active. The heat plus increased activity lead to…sweating. And sweating can lead to body odorwhich nobody wants!

While no one wants to deal with body odor, conventional deodorant usually contains harmful chemicals and additives which have been linked to some serious health issues. Why put a concoction of toxic chemicals in your armpits, which also block your body’s natural ability to sweat, when you can use natural deodorant, a non-toxic healthier alternative that you can make your own?

Harmful Ingredients Found in Conventional Deodorant

A quick Google search of the ingredients used in conventional deodorant will make your head spin! Here’s a list of some of the ingredients you need to avoid when it comes to deodorant:

  • Aluminum
  • Phthalates
  • Parabens
  • Propylene glycol
  • Formaldehyde

You can learn more about them in this post: How to Detox Your Armpits

Before you make the switch to natural deodorant…

If you’ve been using conventional deodorant for a while, there’s probably a lot of toxic buildup in your underarms. It’s best to detox your armpits before you start using natural deodorant. This prevents a detox rash and experiencing even more body odor as your pores finally open up and release all those toxic chemicals.

Another great benefit to an armpit detox is that it helps draw out some of that toxic buildup from your skin and underarms, which can then speed up the detox process and ease your transition to natural deodorant. Once you get rid of the toxins, your armpits will be less stinky—and that’s what we all want, isn’t it?

How To Detox Your Armpits

You probably need to detox your armpits if:

  • You’ve been getting sick often or have been feeling sluggish.
  • Your lymph nodes are tender.
  • Your armpits are stinkier than normal.
  • You experience a rash while using a natural deodorant that contains baking soda.
  • You’ve never done an armpit detox.

Now, back to this natural deodorant spray…

I actually stumbled upon this natural deodorant spray accidentally. Well, kinda. You see, I originally made it as a refresher spray for my husband’s car (haha!). He drives Uber so a refresher spray is a must. I was driving his car one time when I realized that I had ran out the door without putting on any deodorant. So I quickly looked around, saw the refresher spray and thought to myself, “Why not?! I love the way this smells and it’s got to be better than nothing, right?!”

And I’m so glad I tried it because I discovered that it makes a great DIY natural spray deodorant. It works so well!!! Plus it smells so good, so earthy and so uplifting. Seriously, don’t let the simplicity of this recipe fool you. I love this recipe as a refresher spray and now I love it as a natural deodorant spray, too. Who knows what else it could be good for?! If anyone tries it for anything else, let me know!

My husband uses it as a deodorant spray too and he loves it. He says that he stays smelling fresh even after a light workout session.

Natural Deodorant Spray

Here’s why this DIY natural deodorant spray works:

Apple cider vinegar not only kills bacteria that causes body odor and makes us stinky, but the acid also raises your skin’s pH so that you don’t stink later.

For this recipe, I used an herbal hydrosol made from peppermint, rosemary and sage. Peppermint contains menthol, which not only has a fresh scent but creates a fresh, cooling, tingly sensation too. It also has antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Rosemary has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. It also has a refreshing scent and masks bad body odor, making it ideal as a natural deodorant! Sage eliminates bad odor by killing bacteria and fungi, slowing the growth and spread of bacterial infections, and also protecting against new infections. It also has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Dead Sea salt isn’t necessary but it’s rich in magnesium and dozens of other minerals that work together to improve skin quality while controlling body odor and absorbing sweat. Adding Dead Sea salt to this natural deodorant spray recipe significantly decreases underarm odor, no matter how much you sweat!

Witch hazel is great for the skin, and has strong antioxidant, astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. It also naturally soothes and cleans the skin without irritating your skin or drying it out.

The essential oils in this recipe have antimicrobial properties and are also great for your skin. They’ll leave you smelling super fresh and clean. Cedarwood essential oil reduces skin irritation and has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Its pleasant wood-like scent may also help eliminate body odor. Juniper essential oil has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. It also has a refreshing scent and masks bad body odor, making it ideal as a natural deodorant! Eucalyptus essential oil has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It also prevents odors and infections, leaving your skin odor-free and protected! Bergamot essential oil is double-trouble against body odor. It has naturally deodorizing properties that stop the growth of odor-causing bacteria plus a delicate and refreshing yet powerful scent that eliminates odors.

Woodsy DIY Natural Deodorant Spray Recipe

I can’t wait for you to try my natural deodorant spray recipe for yourself and see why we love it so much!

This recipe makes enough for a 4-ounce spray bottle.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces apple cider vinegar
  • 1.5 ounces peppermint, rosemary and sage hydrosol *See note below*
  • 1/4 teaspoonful Dead Sea salt
  • 0.5 ounces witch hazel
  • 8 drops cedarwood essential oil
  • 14 drops juniper essential oil
  • 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 4 drops bergamot essential oil

Note: For stronger odor protection, use 100-proof vodka (or higher) instead of the peppermint, rosemary and sage hydrosol. (We use the hydrosol and it works very well for us. The 100-proof vodka just makes it super strong!)

Directions:

Natural Deodorant Spray

  1. Fill a 4-ounce fine mist spray bottle with 2 ounces of apple cider vinegar.
  2. Warm the hydrosol in the microwave for 15-20 seconds. Add 1/4 teaspoonful of Dead Sea salt to the hydrosol and mix in thoroughly until all the salt has dissolved. Add to the ACV.
  3. Add your essential oils to the mixture.
  4. Fill the bottle the rest of the way up with 0.5 ounces of witch hazel.
  5. Put the top back on and shake the bottle for a few seconds so all the ingredients can mix well together.

How To Use

Shake well before use. Spray 1-2 times in each armpit after showering or whenever your underarms need freshening up.

Use this natural deodorant spray as needed. You’ll probably need to use it 2-3 times a day initially and on hot days. But as your armpits adjust to using natural deodorant, you’ll probably just need to use it one time a day.

That’s it—pretty simple, right?

My husband loves this natural deodorant spray. It has worked pretty well for us so I’m hoping you’ll love it too. I also hope that it keeps you odor-free and fresh without having to reintroduce toxic chemicals back into your life.

Don’t have time to DIY?

This antibacterial body spray is an even more effective odor-blocking natural deodorant spray. It contains African wild cucumber extract which has incredibly powerful odor-blocking properties. It gets rid of odor-producing bacteria found on the skin without stripping skin of its natural moisture. Plus it has an earthy and woodsy scent too, similar to taking a walk through the woods!

Just Remember

Natural deodorant isn’t an antiperspirant so you will still sweat and that’s a very good thing! (Check out this post on the 8 Surprising Benefits of Sweating). Sweating is your body’s natural way of releasing toxins through the skin and it’s SO good for you! By blocking your sweat glands, antiperspirants interfere with this natural process of detoxification, which can lead to acne, body odor, increased infections, and/or fatigue or sluggishness. Although you will still sweat when using this natural deodorant spray, the apple cider vinegar, herbal hydrosol, Dead Sea salt, and essential oils will kill the odor-producing bacteria, keeping you stink-free and fresh!

This recipe has ACV but you will smell nothing like it! That’s important to us, too. We don’t want to smell like apple cider vinegar, either! The cedarwood, juniper, eucalyptus and bergamot essential oils overpower the ACV so you’ll just smell like the earthy and woodsy essential oil blend or whatever essential oil blend that you use.

Under normal conditions, this deodorant spray will keep you smelling fresh all day long with just one application. If you sweat a lot or do intense physical activity, you may have to apply it twice a day. If that doesn’t work either, you can substitute the herbal hydrosol with 100-proof vodka (or higher). That makes the odor protection super strong! Alternatively, you can try one of our antibacterial body sprays which are even super-duper stronger than this natural deodorant spray.

Are you ready to try this woodsy DIY natural deodorant spray recipe—that’s so simple and super convenient?

It’s sure to become one of your faves!
