Have you tried several all-natural aluminum-free deodorants but they didn’t work? If you’ve tried several brands and they have either been tolerable or absolutely terrible or they actually burned your armpits, there’s one natural deodorant that works like a charm.
I’m sure there’s natural deodorant that works just fine, but this one is the one that has really worked for me and my daughter. I’ve been using these deodorant sticks for a couple of months now…and I’m really happy I made the switch.
Why Doesn’t Natural Deodorant Work?
Do you have a love-hate relationship with natural deodorant? Have you decided to make the switch from conventional deodorant but you keep being smelly, having to reapply deodorant again and again to try to mask the smell? Does it seem like you can’t get the natural deodorant to prevent the smell in the first place? Or that you react more severely to baking soda-containing deodorant when you alternate between natural and conventional deodorant because you can’t afford to be smelly?
Well…this is because you can’t switch from using conventional deodorant to an aluminum-free natural deodorant immediately and expect it to work. You might think that the natural deodorant doesn’t work…but switching to natural deodorant takes a little bit more than that. Making the switch is a process, and an armpit detox, which doesn’t take long (only a week or two), is SO worth it.
What is an Armpit Detox?
If you have been using conventional deodorant for a while and make the switch to natural deodorant, your body goes through a process of releasing the toxic buildup in your armpits. Conventional deodorant contains aluminum salts plus a variety of other toxic chemicals which create a barrier and prevent your natural function of sweating and releasing toxic buildup.
When you stop using conventional deodorant, your pores finally open up and your body starts the detox process by releasing all that toxic buildup. You may experience more body odor or even develop a detox rash. Your body is able to naturally get rid of toxins, especially if you eat well, exercise, and drink lots of water. But…this process of detoxing your armpits can take anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks!
Wait…what?!
Yes! That’s a long time to have body odor!
The good news is there’s a way to speed up this process and detox your armpits in just 15 minutes. Not only does using an armpit detox before starting natural deodorant speed up the detox process, it also makes the switch that much easier and reduces the chance of baking soda in some natural deodorant to cause armpit irritation.
Plus, detoxing your armpits draws out that toxic chemical buildup from your skin and armpits which has accumulated after many years of conventional deodorant use.
Why Should You Switch to Natural Deodorant?
Have you ever looked at the ingredients listed on your conventional deodorant? The list may be short but it’s horrifying—aluminum, phthalates, parabens, propylene glycol, and formaldehyde!
Say what?!
Aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and osteoporosis. Phthalates have been linked to infertility, early puberty in girls, birth defects in kids, trouble losing weight, and even certain cancers. Parabens interfere with the production of hormones and have also been linked to breast cancer. Propylene glycol (antifreeze) causes cancer, stupor, and convulsions plus it’s toxic to your kidneys and liver. And formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that can cause neurotoxicity, liver toxicity, damage to the lymphatic system, and cancer.
These are the carcinogenic chemicals and harmful toxins you expose yourself to every time you apply conventional deodorant. Not only that, most conventional deodorant contains antiperspirants that clog pores and block your body’s natural ability to sweat. You may think that this is a good thing but it isn’t. Sweating has its benefits. It’s your body’s way of getting rid of toxins and filtering out viruses and cancer cells.
Natural deodorant doesn’t have any of the above chemicals yet it does a fine job of handling stinky sweat and odors without interfering with your body’s natural ability to sweat. With natural deodorant your sweat is released outside your body along with bacteria and toxins instead of keeping it inside in your tissues. Sweating is natural and good for you, and your body sweats for a reason so this process should not be interrupted or interfered with.
Have you ever felt a lump in your armpit or your lymph nodes have felt enlarged when you were sick? Your lymph nodes are a major part of your immune system and that’s their way of trying to rid your body of toxins, cancer cells, viruses and/or bacteria.
Does an Armpit Detox Really (Like, Really) Work?
The short answer is yes. Yes it does!
An armpit detox lets your armpits breathe and in the process allows your body to eliminate built-up toxins from years of conventional deodorant use. Once you detox your armpits and correct their bacterial imbalances, you’ll notice that you sweat less and stink less, even without wearing any deodorant. You’ll also notice the ease with which you’ll transition to the natural deodorant, without experiencing any rash or skin irritation.
I definitely recommend an armpit detox if you plan on making the switch to natural deodorant.
Bentonite Clay 15-Minute Armpit Detox
This bentonite clay 15-minute armpit detox draws out built-up toxins in the tissues and the skin under the armpits. This in turn prevents the unpleasant reactions such as skin rash and irritation that occur when you switch to natural deodorant.
It has only 3 INGREDIENTS—bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar, and some water to get the right consistency. This recipe is one of the easiest, if not the easiest, DIY recipe you’ll ever make! It’s actually more commonly used as a face mask. Turns out, this bentonite clay recipe works well for the rest of your skin, too. Including your armpits.

Here’s how to use it…
Whip up this bentonite clay armpit detox at home and apply a thin layer on each armpit. Do this daily until your body adjusts to the natural deodorant and the unpleasant body odor is gone. Don’t go back to conventional deodorant during this time! Be patient and give this time to do its work!
How Often Should You Detox?
It’s really important to detox your armpits before switching to natural deodorant to help your body draw out toxic buildup from conventional deodorant, reduce body odor, improve tender lymph nodes and boost lymphatic circulation, and to make the switch to natural deodorant seamless.
But just as you treat yourself to a face mask regularly as part of your skincare routine, it’s good to detox your armpits every few months to keep things running smoothly. Your lymphatic system plays a huge role in your immune system and helps to get rid of toxins from your body, so an armpit detox should be a part of your skincare routine.
When you first make the switch to natural deodorant, you need to detox your armpits daily or at least 2-3 times a week until your underarm odor goes away. If you’re doing this armpit detox because your natural deodorant is irritating, you will have to do it until the irritation stops. Either way, you should be able to notice a decrease in body odor soon after your first application. But remember that every body is different, so it may take longer for yours to adjust.
As you detox (and literally all the time) drink a LOT of water and move your body each day so that you flush those toxins out faster and more effectively and also avoid getting dehydrated!
Angels n’ Dudes’ Sensitive Skin Natural Deodorant
This is my fave natural deodorant and it really works!
Instead of masking odor with fragrance and chemicals, Angels n’ Dudes natural deodorant neutralizes odor with African wild cucumber and bentonite clay and absorbs wetness with arrowroot powder (though it is not technically an antiperspirant), while still allowing your body to sweat and release toxins.
It absorbs quickly and glides on like silk thanks to the coconut oil and shea butter base—and it’s absolutely baking-soda-free. It’s also aluminum-free, paraben-free, has NO harmful chemicals, NO artificial fragrances, NO GMOs, NO artificial preservatives, and absolutely NO toxic ingredients!
So it keeps you fresh and dry—but in an all-natural way! Citrus Mint is my fave but it also comes in Cedarwood Juniper and in an all-natural charcoal formula as well. Activated charcoal is an added bonus as it draws out odor-causing bacteria and toxins. The essential oil scents are gentle enough for young skin but strong enough to leave you feeling good about smelling good.
This natural deodorant that works is safe for everyday use but tough enough to handle the most rigorous activities. The stick formula contains beeswax for more convenience and less mess. It’s all-natural and super-effective at preventing odor, protecting dryness, and soothing skin.
Extra Tips and Suggestions
- Be patient: If you’re new to using natural products, be prepared to give your body time during this transitional period to get rid of all that toxic buildup. It may take a while for your body to adjust to the natural products. Try the product for at least 7 days before judging its effectiveness. You can also try different scents because different scents may have varied effectiveness on your body’s chemistry. I prefer Citrus Mint but my husband likes Cedarwood Juniper.
- Sweat it out: Remember that sweating has its benefits and it’s good for you. Do some exercise everyday. It helps to open up your pores and efficiently remove toxins from your bod! (And by now you understand why this is important.)
- Practice good hygiene: This natural deodorant will last throughout the day, but it probably won’t last through an HIIT workout at the end of a long day. Shower daily and immediately after a workout. Dry off thoroughly after taking a shower or bath. In a pinch, use antibacterial body spray on your armpits and body and let it dry before applying natural deodorant and getting dressed. Detox your armpits regularly too!
- Drink LOTS of water: Water helps to flush the toxins out quicker and more effectively, so drink up! It also avoids dehydration.
